Spring Quick Tip

We are well into spring now! Flowers are blooming, brown grass is transitioning to lush, green and new insects are appearing. More than likely, in the more recent weeks your child has been experiencing nasal congestion, coughing, sneezing, tearing, crusty eyes, or any combination of the former symptoms. While I have already written an article about allergic rhinitis, I wanted to share another quick tip. This is especially for the parent who already has their child on meds for allergy symptoms and is seeing minimal improvement. Have you noticed that layer of yellowish- green dust settling on your car, or perhaps, the patio furniture? Well, that is pollen, which has collected there over a very short time. Do you know that a short visit to the park, or an outdoor playdate, or even a quick trip to the grocery store can have a similar affect to your skin and body? It may not be enough for us to see clearly, but it is there. What happens after you get home from such a trip? That material is transmitted indoors to wherever you decide to sit and get comfortable. If you decide to catch a snuggle with your little one on the bed, you will be having daily, prolonged nightly exposure to pollen and allergens on a constant basis until you ultimately decide to change those sheets. Moral of the story is: after any outdoor activities in spring season, as soon as you get home, it is good practice to leave shoes at door, wash face and hands and preferably change clothing before getting comfortable at home, particularly on the sofa or bed. Let me know if you try this and notice any difference.
